5 out of 5 stars PS3 The Remix   July 14, 2010

I previously had a PlayStation 3 40GB. However, it was on its last leg. Therefore, I decided to take advantage of GameStop's PS3 trade-in offer for this newer version. There are a few new features when comparing both systems.

Size comparison:

The slim is a lot smaller (7.05lbs.) than the fat PS3, which is 11lbs. Overall, the slim is 33% lighter than the fat PS3.

Console design comparison:

I actually like the new design of the slim. The body is not shiny or as fancy as the fat PS3. The texture would be similar to the finish of a counter top. The finish seems scratch resistant, as well. At least, it is not a dust magnetic and scratch haven as the fat PS3. The slim still has some shiny parts on the console, where the buttons are located. This part has a mirror-like finish, which is slightly different than the fat PS3's finish. Your reflection can be seen. That is the best way to describe it. In addition, both sides of the console has the same shiny finish ala the PS3 fat.

Speaking of the buttons, some people do not like them because they are physical buttons, unlike the touch-sensitive buttons of the PS3 fat. I believe the slim's buttons are better because I do not have to worry about fingerprints, while pressing the buttons. In addition, the buttons no longer have to be held down to turn the system on or off. Just press the button, and the console turns on. The same happens when powering the console off. The power and eject buttons illuminate, as well. Therefore, players do not have to try finding the buttons, if they decide to turn it off in the dark. Of course, the controller can be used, as well.

One of the most important new features is the quietness of the slim's fan. It is a lot more quiet than the fat PS3's fan. In fact, I have to get up close to the machine to hear it. That is a great thing. I can now play and not have to worry about that loud fan, which used to annoy me, while I used to play my fat PS3. The slim is more energy efficient and uses less power than the fat PS3. This could reduce the strain on this system, which could lead to issues from long term use, such as the YLOD. The HDD is easily accessible, now. It is directly underneath the power and eject buttons. Now, players can upgrade the HDD, without voiding the warranty. Of course, if players had a 40GB PS3, they can probably live with the 120GB HDD, which comes with the slim. That is a 80GB upgrade.

Console set-up:

Setting up the system could not be more easier. In fact, if you already have a router, just flash through the options, which ask about your internet set up. Of course, I have a wired router. Therefore, it might be a little different for wireless router owners. During set-up, players will be prompted to create a new PSN ID or use the previous one. If players are worried about transferring data, such as games saves, music or pictures from one PS3 to another, no problem. If you still have your old PS3, plug the ethernet cable to each console. For those, who have data saved to a flash drive, just plug it into the slim, and copy the data. It is that easy.

In case of a possible YLOD or other issue, I would recommend having a flash drive, and saving your data. Who wants to lose game saves, pictures, and music? If you have downloading demos, add-ons, and full games, do not worry! For players with an existing PSN ID, just re-download the demos, add-ons or full games. Of course, you will not be re-charged for the re-downloading of your add-ons or full game purchases because they were already purchased via PSN account.

The verdict:

Outside of what was mentioned, there are no other new features. However, if gamers are thinking about switching to PS3, the slim is a good way to start. For those looking to just switch from a fat PS3, I would not recommend it, unless you feel like it is necessary. Either way, this system is worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Cannot be used as a media player   July 12, 2010

This is very good console for gaming. It has media player capability, however this cannot replace media player. It gives only HD output thru bluray player. It has hardware restrictions, you cannot attach NTFS partitioned USB drive and only supports FAT32.

Guys do not buy PS3 as a media player.

5 out of 5 stars PS3 120GB: An All-Around Media Device   July 11, 2010

The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) 120GB is a useful media hub for those who watch movies, view pictures, listen to music, and play games. It allows you to do all these, making it versatile. For watching movies, you have several options: Blu-ray video discs, downloaded videos, and streaming video via Netflix.

If you have a media source, you can stream music to the PS3 and pipe it through your A/V theater system. I am able to do this, for example, with a Sony Ericsson W705 Walkman Phone as the source of music. Netflix movie streaming requires a disc from Netflix but is free when requested. All you need to do is to register the PS3 on the Netflix page at [...].

Blu-ray playback is excellent. We use the PS3 as a Blu-ray video disc player as well and so far all the discs we've viewed (including the latest releases) play without any hitches. It also helps to have Wi-Fi built into the PS3 so you can view BD-Live content and, on some discs, stream the latest trailers before viewing the main feature. We use the Sony PlayStation 3 Blu-ray Disc Remote Control since using the game controller is rather inconvenient. Note that this remote is a Bluetooth device and not an IR remote. If you want a universal remote control that also supports Bluetooth in the PS3, this product might be useful (although we haven't tried it): PS3 Blu-Link Universal Remote Control

We also loaded music, pictures, and video into the PS3 via a USB thumb drive and they worked well. We were able to play 720p MP4 video files. The pictures looked stunning on our TV (though it's only a 720p HDTV).

The system comes with a USB cable for charging the single PS3 Dualshock 3 Wireless Controller that also comes with it. A composite video cable is included but not an HDMI cable. You can purchase a good and reasonably priced HDMI Cable 6ft 1080P FOR PS3 TO DVD LCD HDTV here on Amazon.com.

Overall, the system is quiet. We don't hear the fan turn on. The system gets warm after some time but it seems to be normal for this model (CECH-2101A) -- for example, when you eject a disc that's been playing on the PS3, it feels warm. So far, there have been no problems though.

We replaced an old 40GB PS3 (the non-slim one) with this one and are happier with it. The old PS3's fan was really loud.

5 out of 5 stars The PS3 from the viewpoint of a lifelong Xbox user   July 11, 2010

OK I am re-doing my review because I didn't know what I was talking about. The PS3 blows the 360 out of the water. It is a complete package, not like the 360, which I had to buy piece after piece to get basic functionality.

Graphics: I am just basing this off demos, but the PS3 is way more powerful. I played the demos for Resident Evil 5, Uncharted, Killzone 2 and Infamous. No contest. Little details like my character in Uncharted wading though a pool of water and under a waterfall. he came out soaking wet and you could tell that his clothes were wet. The PS3 simply has more processing power, plus the added memory capability of Bluray gives the programmers much more functionality and creativity.

Hardware: with the PS3 it is basically a computer. You can play games, you can surf the web and actually visit most sites which was surprising, you can watch Bluray movies, you can post photos by plugging the camera directly into the PS3, you can listen to music. OH AND IT DOESN'T OVERHEAT/RROD LIKE THE XBOX 360! I was going to recommend the 360 to a friend who has the PS3 already but I can't recommend it anymore unless you get it really cheap. A 60% failure rate is terrible, if I had known about it I would have never purchased a 360. I am not sure of the rates of failure for the new systems but Microsoft has left me with a bad taste in my mouth, even though they are fixing it for free. This is my 3rd Xbox to die on me, my 2 original Xboxes also had problems.

I think Microsoft made a bad move not supporting Bluray out of the box. They didn't have to make games that supported it but at least have movies. also it is dead quiet even playing games. My 360 sounded like a jet even with games installed to the HD. and I like being able to upgrade my HD anytime I want. No shelling out $$$ for propriety hard drives or jumping through hoops to transfer data. Being able to charge my controller with a standard MiniUSB cable rather than swapping out batteries like on the 360.

Software: The XMB interface is really pretty to look at. It is pretty graphically rich, it has animated backgrounds. There are a great number of themes out there, and they are really easy to install. My favorite feature is how you can play with system settings without exiting your game. Also it is cool when you hover over your installed games the background changes and shows you a preview in the tiny window with audio. it looks pretty next generation to me. also being able to download stuff in the background while doing things like gaming is awesome (multitasking!).

Online: Well in my previous draft I said that XBL is better than the free PSN, I think the opposite in some regards. I think XBL has more demos available, but the PSN is free. Why do you need to pay money to play multi-player for a game you already paid for? Also, if you want to use netflix or any streaming service you HAVE to have XBL. Also PS3 players seem to be more mature, no playing music over the microphone, no cussing like a sailor, etc.

Caveats: My only caveat about the system is the controller, it isn't made for people with big hands. I know you can get a 3rd party controller but I just love the 360's controller. I am sure some will say you will get used to it but the main problem is the triggers. They are not long enough. My hands end up cramping while playing racing games (my primary genre).

To sum it up, the PS3 is a complete, well rounded package. You can go with the 360 with it's questionable hardware reliability, lack of built in, basic functionality like being able to surf the web and controller charging, or you can go with something that has all that for the same price. I mentioned exclusives previously, not so much a big deal. I will take Killzone over Halo anyday.
