| | | Slide out controls maximize screen space. View larger. | The smallest, most portable PSP yet. View larger. | The Most Portable and Powerful PSP Yet The PSP Go, has all the functionality that older PSP hardware versions had, but includes many important and exciting changes. Unlike previous versions whose primary means of playing media was via a built-in Universal Media Disc (UMD) drive, the PSP Go does away with UMDs altogether and instead relies on a media solution combining download functionality via Sony's PlayStation Network, larger onboard storage capacity and removable Memory Stick Duo support. This major change allows for a slim design, quicker access files and a much more quiet, energy efficient gaming experience since there are no longer any spinning UMDs. Other major changes include: Bluetooth support, allowing Internet Skype calls to now be made using compatible headsets; and more importantly, a change to the control scheme. The PSP Go features convenient slide out controls. Although these are consistent with historical PSP controls--featuring four directional arrows, the four familiar Sony face buttons and a left-oriented analog thumbstick--their ability to be placed out of view when not in use allows the PSP Go to maximize the use of its screen and your viewing pleasure. A Full Entertainment System in Your Hands The PSP was designed to handle all varieties of applications and entertainment -- music, video, communication, wireless networking, and, of course, gaming. PSP Go users will enjoy topnotch 3D games with high-quality, full-motion video, and high-fidelity audio. Its ultra-crisp 3.8-inch wide screen LCD display is bright and beautiful, and works well under many different lighting conditions. A Wealth of Games to Choose From The PlayStation Portable gaming library is hundreds of titles strong and covers a wide variety of genres. The PSP Go is compatible with all PSP formatted games and Sony has pledged to have all these available for download via the PlayStation Network's PlayStation Store. Whether you are seeking the hard knocks of football or other sports games, the strategy of a puzzle games, or the action and adventure of shooters and racers, there's sure to be many games in your future with the PSP Go. Via the PlayStation Store users can also download an assortment of PS One games ported over to the PSP format. The PSP Go is capable of graphics quality that is comparable to the PlayStation 2 console, but in a pocket-sized package, so whatever your game is you can be assured of a quality experience. Watch Movies and Videos on the Go When you just want to sit back and enjoy a movie or video on a long plane trip, or anywhere else, the PSP Go has you covered. It offers two options to do this: you can either transfer media ahead of time to a Memory Stick Duo, or using the PSP Go's Wi-Fi functionality, your free membership to the PlayStation Network and access to a hotspot, you can download movies, TV shows, game trailers and more directly to your PSP Go. If users prefer they can also download content ahead of time to a PS3 or a Windows-based PC, via Media Go software, for faster transfer to their PSP Go, and can also watch recorded television content downloaded to a Memory Stick Duo with the TiVo-To-Go service. (additional fee and a TiVo Series2 connected to your home network also required). Music and Other Functionality With the ability to play MP3, WAV, WMA, ATRAC3+, and MP4 files, you can easily use your PSP Go as an audio player. Simply place your music on a Memory Stick Duo, and you can navigate your collection using the PSP Go's XMB (XrossMediaBar) to select your song to play. Built-in Wi-Fi Allows for Internet Browsing, Online Gaming and More With built-in Wi-Fi capabilities, you can access the Internet from any accessible hotspot. Once connected, you can surf the Web, check e-mail and visit the PlayStation Store to download games, exclusive demos and game content and even update your system and game software in seconds. The PSP Go is first and foremost a gaming device though. Ad hoc enabled multiplayer games allow PSP players in close proximity to play together, but your PSP Go's Wi-Fi connection also allows you to battle other gamers anywhere in the world over the Internet, in online infrastructure multiplayer games. Other functionality available remotely via a broadband connection includes: Internet radio; LocationFree TV, allowing you to view your home media setup from anywhere; RSS feeds; Remote Play, which gives you access to your PS3; and more. I LOVE my PSP GO! I was unsure about whether or not I would like it, but I have to say that I instantly fell in love with it.
A year or so ago I decided I would get a PSP 3000 instead of a GO because I wanted to be able to play game discs. It cost me $200 for the psp, a 4gb memory card, a movie, and a game. Then I found that I loved downloading games so much that I bought a 16gb memory stick pro duo, which cost me about $50. I loved my psp and put many hours of gameplay into it, but it was so big and bulky and game discs were a pain to carry around. I brought it places but found it hard to carry when it was so large.
I decided to sell all that I had a get a psp go with the money. So for $250, you get 16 gb of memory, plus theres a special deal from now till march of 2011 where you get 3 free games from sony for buying a psp go. Those games include littlebigplanet, socom 3 and ratchet and clank which in total cost about 80 dollars if you were to buy them separately. plus the go is only slightly larger than an iphone, and has many new cool features. One of my favorites being that you can pause any game at any time using the ps button on the face of the psp, then later return to it at any time.
One of my main concerns was if the controls would be too cramped. I do have to say that while they are cramped, it is not terrible. And at first I didnt know how much I liked the placement of the joystick, now I have to say that I love it. The controls are actually not a problem during most games. Only ones like metal gear peacewalker are a bit difficult to control, but not enough that I dislike the experience.
Another concern I had was that the games on the playstation store would be much more expensive than the hard discs at the store. I have not found this to be the case. The playstation store has competitive pricing with many top games costing only $10 or $20 bucks.
So basically, I think it comes down to your individual taste. Do you want something small and portable so you can play your games without having to lug discs around? Or would you rather have slightly more comfortable controls, a little larger screen, and a large psp to lug around with discs? personally, I have found the go to be much more my style. I just had to get on here and recommend it because I think it has been extremely underrated by consumers and reviewers.
Don't be stupid! September 4, 2010 Joshua M. Goad 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
People don't realize that this is a horrible idea and should not proceed into the future of sony handheld systems. All we have to do as a consumer is say fu sony we're not falling for this crap, therefore don't buy the product. I'm part of the sony fan club, in fact i've had more sony products in my house than any other and it will most likely stay that way, but this psp go is just ripping off hardworking people. What i'm getting at is the umd drive and the smaller screen. The umd has been taken away and will cost you any where from 20 to 30 dollars more on each game(of course depending on the game) than it would on a used game from amazon or even a game store like gamestop. Bottom line, stick to the regular psp 3000 or 2000 and boycott this kind of avaricious endeavor that sony is experimenting with to make as much money as possible.
playstation portible go September 2, 2010 lovejustingt90 after using the psp go for a month i would have to say it the best psp i have used so far one issue of course is there is no umd slot but with the 16gb internal memory it holds a great amount of games music videos and pictures, i also noticed that it hardly has a lag during remote play on the ps3 system.
the image quality is about the same as the others a little improvement could have been done there but other than the problems with it there is a lot of uses for it and to those who do buy it i hope u enjoy it like i do.
psp go is tight September 1, 2010 Pablo Baltazar I bought this psp like a week ago, and let me tell you- its pretty cool that I can download psp games to my ps3 and transfer them and still have 4 downloads left for that game so you can hook up your friends or make a dollar or two of them. I like the 16gb it has so I can take it anywhere like work and not have to take a sack full of UMDs or extra memory sticks. I bought it to replace my old psp1001that died after many years of great service and game play. Its cool that you can sync a ps3 control and use it with full function. The wireless is wifi-b but who cares, I use it to check e-mails and facebook at work so I dont spend hours online on my psp and I dont look for faults on my psp like all these bad reviewers here. I love this psp its pretty tight you have to want it to truly appreciate this tiny system.
