Ouch - bought this one just before Aug 2010 release of NEW Kindle July 29, 2010 K. Corn (Indianapolis,, IN United States) I have two Kindles. One is first generation (and I still love it) and the other is the Kindle DX (which I love even more). But I am writing this review in light of the fact that the newer Kindles will soon be here and anyone contemplating a Kindle DX should not buy one until you read about the upcoming features on the newer and FAR CHEAPER models of the Kindle. There will two of them.
Otherwise, you might feel like me and think...Ouch!...because shortly after I bought the "new" Kindle in 2010, the release of an even newer set of Kindles was announced (in Aug 2010), one for $139 and one for $189. I've compared the features and I am truly wondering if I should have waited. These Kindles are being released so fast and furiously that it is hard to know how soon the "newest" Kindle will be replaced by a newer version!
I know that the Kindle DX has holds far more books and has longer battery life than the first generation Kindle. But what about the newer versions? Will they do just as well and cost far less than I paid for my Kindle DX? They will definitely be lighter to carry! The DX weighs far more.
For those of you contemplating a Kindle DX, I would strongly suggest waiting to see how the newest Kindles do. It is impossible to review them, including possible glitches, until they ship on August 27. But since it is late July as I write this, I have to ask why anyone would want to pay $379 for the current Kindle (which shows as being "in stock" ) when the newer ones will be released in about a month.
If you still are interested in the DX, it does upload books quickly, has nearly a 10 inch reading display, up to 3G in storage, etc. I'd be happy to answer any more questions for those who want to leave any in the comments section but since this review is coming so close to the release of the newer Kindles, I think it would be worthwhile to look at both the Kindle DX page and the upcoming Kindle model (Aug 27) and compare features. I'd love to know what others think.
Finally, an ebook reader that "feels" like a book! July 29, 2010 Nicholas Sabalos Jr. (Springfield, VA, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
A little background......I've tried a couple of ebook readers in recent years and, after a day or two, found them unacceptable for any number of reasons. For example, the Sony device was cumbersome and adding books was frustrating and a plain hassle. I tried an early Kindle, but was unimpressed with the overall functionality and screen clarity. I experimented with various ebook reading software for my smartphone (which has a screen the same size as the average iPhone) such as Mobipocket and eReader (Barnes and Noble's software now). But, reading from a backlit screen that was still so small and was, again, cumbersome and less than satisfying. Again, purchasing and adding books to the device was just too much of a hassle.
Amazon has finally come up with an ereader that really DOES "feel" like a real book. By that, I mean, I HAVE found myself getting "lost" in the book or articles I am reading.....forgetting that I am not holding a paper book, but an electronic device. I never thought it would happen.....but the latest Kindle DX (July 2010) is so crisp in its display, so intuitively easy to operate and deep enough in features to make it a remarkable device. Adding a book is so simple, I suspect a young child could do it. Amazon's Kindle management features, both on Amazon.com and on the Kindle device itself are well-thought out and make the whole experience a hassle-free enjoyable experience. Just like buying a book in a bookstore used to be.....simple, rewarding, exciting with anticipation of a good read.
I also purchased the Amazon Kindle DX leather cover. Amazon Kindle DX Black Leather Cover (Fits 9.7" Display, Latest and 2nd Generation Kindles) Despite earlier issues with the cover, it apears Amazon has quietly fixed them. There is now a magnet embedded in the back of the cover that, with a slight tug, gently reminds you to not open the Kindle cover from the back (apparently risking damage to the Kindle, at times, in the past). Again, well-thought-out, Amazon!

Works great for school July 28, 2010 gradstudent 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I am a grad student in a doctoral program so I weighed my desire for a Kindle against my desire to eat nothing but Ramen noodles for over a year. When the new graphite 9.7 Kindle was introduced I finally decided to stop agonizing and buy. I am so glad I did.
PROs
PDF: For me, the biggest and most useful thing about the new graphite Kindle is the ability to store and read PDF articles. As a graduate student, journal articles are essentially my life. I have thousands of them on my computer, now on my Kindle. I can read them when I fly to conferences or just mark notes and take them into lecture for discussion. The Kindle has been remarkably handy in this respect. (I should note that I am a getting my degree in a social science field, and therefore most of the articles I read are not technical or graphics heavy, usually just tables and notes).
BOOKS: Books are also very easy to read, although my free time to read for pleasure is pretty much nonexistant. I have not had any trouble with the screen or the appearance of the words, after a while I even forget that I am not holding an actual book. I do not have any of my textbooks on the Kindle but that is just a personal quirk of mine.
TIME: With this Kindle I can hook it up to my computer via the USB and just load my articles on very quickly. I have also found the downloads from the Amazon store to my Kindle are also very quick and I have been in some remote areas of the country and still been able to download books.
CONs
FOLDERS: As other reviewers mentioned, there is no folder option, so I have to scroll through pages of books and articles to find the correct one. There is an option to tag the articles but I just have not found the time to do that yet.
WEIGHT: The 9.7 is a bit awkward to hold and read. I solved this by buying a case that flipped open into a stand for the Kindle.
FEAR: I read review upon review before deciding to purchase my Kindle and one of my biggest fears came from reading reviews where the Kindle would just freeze and quit or suffer a slight fall and break beyond repair. I purchased the extended warranty but I still live in fear of irrepable damage to this device on which I spent so much money, especially given how much flying I do.
NEUTRALs
COLOR: I like the color of the graphite Kindle more than the white. I also think the color might help the words on the screen stand out a bit more, but that is a personal opinion.
KEYBOARD: I have not used the keyboard very much, so I am not sure how to rank it. In my experiene it has been pretty easy and smooth.
OVERALL
So far, I am very pleased with my decision to purchase this Kindle. I have found that the ability to store and take thousands of journal articles with me to conferences and meetings and lectures has been extremely helpful. I like the look and feel of the Kindle and I find it very easy to read.
